La La Land: a timeless masterpiece
On December 9 and Christmas day, the highly anticipated movie, La La Land came to theaters across the country. With a cast full of favorites including Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and John Legend, it was sure to be a hit.
La La Land is a musical that follows the story of a struggling jazz musician and an aspiring actress as they experience the ups and downs of pursuing their dreams in modern day Los Angeles. As the two fall in love with each other, they face a choice many have had to make: following their dreams or love?
In the film, Los Angeles is referred to as the “city of stars” with various shots of jazz lounges, theaters, a planetarium, and even part of a freeway that was shut down to film the musical number in the opening scene. There’s a retro vibe added to the movie with it’s colorful costumes and specific locations that distinguishes this movie from the rest. Due to this, La La Land will never go out of style and appeals to all ages.
Even viewers who aren’t fans of musicals will fall in love with this movie. The music is catchy, upbeat, and just plain fun. There’s plenty of beautiful instrumental pieces by Justin Hurwitz with unpredictable jazz numbers mixed in. The dancing is phenomenal as well considering Gosling and Stone are not professionals dancers.
Viewers simply will not be able to leave the theater without feeling energised and experiencing a drive to pursue their own ambitions. There will be laughter, tears, and a constant sense of excitement throughout the entire movie as it perfectly pictures how exciting being young and in the city can be.
Not only did La La Land win all seven of the Golden Globes it was nominated for on January 8, it broke the record for most Golden Globes won by a movie. The past records were held by One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975 and Midnight Express in 1978, each earning six awards.
La La Land impressively took home the categories “Best Actor for a Musical or Comedy”, “Best Actress for a Musical or Comedy”, “Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture”, “Best Director of a Motion Picture”, “Best Original Score”, and “Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture”. Clearly it was a successful night for this film and it fully deserved every award it received.
For these reasons, La La Land deserves five out of five stars. It’s a must-see for everybody, especially for those interested in classy music, dancing, and quality entertainment.
