Whistle blower triggers impeachment inquiry on 45

Amethyst Lightwood, Opinion Editor

Two months ago, in August, an undisclosed whistle blower wrote a letter expressing concern over a phone call between President Trump and the Ukranian President, Volodymyr Zelensky. That letter was finally released two weeks ago and the nation is up in arms.

On July 25, a call took place between Trump and Zelensky, one which many intelligence officials were privileged to be listening in on. One of those intelligence officials was the whistle blower. While the phone call appeared to be Trump simply congratulating Zelensky on his win in Ukraine, it took an interesting turn when Trump asked Zelensky to do him a favor, which ended up being to dig up some dirt on Joseph Biden’s son. Biden is (as of the time the whistle blower’s letter was released) Trump’s front runner opponent in the upcoming presidential election and any information found damaging to Biden’s son would harm his public image.

For those who are not aware, the interference of foreign governments in United States federal elections is illegal under the FEC and the Constitution. To many, this is an impeachable offense, leading to an increase in the number of people who now believe Trump should be impeached.

“The actions taken to date, by the president, have seriously violated the Constitution. Especially when the president says ‘Article II says I can do whatever I want’,” Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker said in her Formal Impeachment Inquiry.

Many Trump supporters, including Trump himself, insist that this is all a ‘Witch Hunt’ and he has done nothing wrong. “It is a COUP, intended to take away the power of the people,” President Trump said. A coup is defined as a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of government power and the Impeachment process is written out in the US Constitution (AP News).

Recently, though, on national television, Trump admitted to asking Ukraine for their help in an investigation into the Bidens. On top of this, he also ‘doubled down’ and asked China to aid the investigation as well (CNBC). It’s gotten to the point where even Fox News, a news source known for its Republican views and support for Trump is admitting that 45 is corrupt.

Support for impeaching Trump is growing and as of recently, it has actually surpassed those who oppose proceedings. Polls suggest that Democrats are gaining support for the impeachment inquiry as a direct result of the whistle blower’s letter exposing the Ukraine scandal, according to polls taken by Politi.co.

Now, the question is, will Trump actually be impeached? And to the surprise of many, this is actually a very likely possibility. For clarification, impeachment and removal from office are two separate things. All you need for impeachment is for the House to vote on the Articles of Impeachment. If it passes, the president is impeached and it moves to the Senate to hold a trial and deliberate whether or not the president should be removed from office.

While many people are still turning a blind eye to the corruption embedded into the political system, more and more are realizing that Trump should not be allowed to continue committing crimes without punishment. If we don’t take care of this now, a precedent will be set for future presidents and it will be too late.
