On Sept. 29, Twenty One Pilots came to Little Caesars Arena in Detroit for The Clancy World Tour. Twenty One Pilots consists of two artists: Tyler Joseph, the lead singer, and Josh Dun, the drummer. The group was formed in 2009 by Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas, and Chris Salih, who left in 2011. Both Joseph and Dun are from Columbus, Ohio. They started touring in 2009 and have only gotten more popular.
Openingly sharing through interviews and in concerts, the lead singer suffers from depression and anxiety and incorporates his struggles into his music. Joseph created this world called “Dema” as a coping mechanism that sets the stage for the album “Clancy.”
Clancy (Tyler) battles Nico and The Niners (mental illnesses) in the imaginary world. He created a whole storyline throughout his music leading up to the Clancy album. The concert, based on the Clancy album, did not disappoint.
The Clancy World Tour started on August 15th, 2024, and has been phenomenal. I had third-row seats right next to the stage with my mom, cousin, and aunt. Before the concert started, we went to the Fan Premier Exhibit, all decked out in our Twenty-One Pilots outfits. The exhibit was filled with costumes, props, and scripts of all their music videos.
For the actual concert, it was the best concert I have ever been to. The set list was genius. With each song connecting to the next, it made perfect sense for people following the Clancy storyline. The albums were spread out enough that there was not a whole album playing at once while still having the songs connected to the storyline with the blend of different albums. It is also notable that all generations can listen and enjoy their music. The albums on the tour were released all throughout the 2000s. I was looking around at the different people at the concert and thought it was so touching.
Their stage presence was the part I enjoyed the most. Tyler Joseph and Josh Dunn are very theatrical, and that trait is displayed throughout the entire concert. During their song “Lavish,” they walked across the stage with their arms linked while looking serious. When they were done with their walk, they bursted out laughing. The musicians also never stayed on stage for very long. They kept walking to the sides of the pit, the back of the stadium, and even the stairs to the few front rows. I was about an inch away from Tyler Joseph at one point and was freaking out. Towards the show’s end, the two members go into the pit and sing some of their popular songs. The pit members hold Josh’s drum set, and Tyler has a platform he stands on.
Overall, the experience was unreal. Their performance and delivery were absolutely amazing. Interacting with the crowd is one of their specialties. They outdid the other tour I had been to. The set list was amazing, and I never got bored once. I recommend going to a Twenty One Pilots concert; it is an experience that you’ll never forget.
