Miley Cyrus goes on the path to insanity
By Staff Writer: Tricia Tucker
Former Disney star, Hannah Montana, has been on quite the roller coaster lately. At the age of twenty, she has the grasp of millions of viewers in the palm of her hand.
Cyrus began her shenanigans with the music video of her new song in 2010, “Can’t be Tamed”. Throughout this video, she portrays a rare species that just can’t tamed, kept in a cage to keep danger from awakening others. Cyrus’s expectations from this video were that people would view her as something wild and crazy. However, it didn’t flow as she had hoped. The song and the music video became widely popular, but it simply wasn’t enough attention she had aspired for. She felt the need to take it another step further.
Cyrus was invited to perform her new hit song “We Can’t Stop” at the VMA awards in 2013. This is a great privilege for Cyrus, and a perfect opportunity to absorb her spotlight.
“It’s our party we can do what we want
It’s our party we can say what we want
It’s our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can see who we want”
The opening verse in “We Can’t Stop”, basically explains to listeners that she can do and say as she wants. Pretty much, she wants viewers to realize that she can do as she pleases. Which is completely fine, until she stepped foot on the stage during the VMA awards.
During this performance, in front of millions of people, Cyrus was wearing a simple teddy bear themed leotard. Throughout the song, she was pelvic thrusting the air, making inappropriate gestures towards herself and others, and also twerking (the act of moving/shaking ones bottom in a circular, up and down, and left and right motion) on those on stage with her, such as Robin Thicke. Not that he was complaining, but come on guys, there were children watching. Toward the end of the show, Cyrus stripped down to wearing nothing more than her undergarments. Now, I know she wants to be viewed as an adult, but seriously, this is a little over the top. She completely threw away this perfect opportunity to have a hit performance. But she didn’t stop there.
When Cyrus came out with her next big hit, “Wrecking Ball”, the music video stuck viewers with disgust. Clearly, she wasn’t in the right state of mind when creating this. Not only does she basically make out with a hammer, but she literally is wearing nothing but her own flesh and skin during parts of the video. The music video is completely inappropriate, and it reveals her as being irresponsible, and immature; especially for someone who is turning 21 in November.
If she is trying to appear as an adult, then why not participate in duets with widely known artists such as Beyonce or Rihanna. That way, she’d still be making money, stay popular, and have an older audience. But instead of thinking rationally, scaring childrens’ parents by revealing her nude body, sexual dance moves, and an extremely long tongue that she just can’t seem to keep in her mouth seemed like a better idea to her.
Strangely enough, Cyrus’s father Billy Ray Cyrus is surprisingly supportive with the decisions she has been making. Although Cyrus’s videos are completely appalling, they’re getting millions and millions of hits. I don’t believe that people are watching them because they’re brilliant, but because they heard she went crazy. Of course, everyone wants to hear about how the former Disney star, Hannah Montana, is falling off the wagon.
Some may believe that this continuous behavior is pure genius simply because of the publicity itself. But she is embarrassing herself. While being naked on camera, making sexual actions during a performance, and just acting completely disgusting, she is demolishing her reputation. She is convincing everybody that she is purely psychotic and incapable of staying away from peer pressure. Sure, she has a nice body and an easy door to show it off, but that does not mean that it is necessary. She is clearly not in the right state of mind, and clearly not as mature as she believes she is.
Why Miley Cyrus is not a psychopath, but a marketing genius

“Can you believe what Miley Cyrus did at the VMA’s?”
“Did you hear about her new song?”
“Oh my gosh…did you see the “Wrecking Ball” video?”
Miley Cyrus is definitely in the public eye right now. In fact, she’s all anybody’s talking about. Cyrus actually boasted through Twitter that her VMA performance received more Twitter coverage than the NFL blackout.
The NFL blackout, guys.
And she’s not wrong. All teenagers and adults are talking about in the weeks following the VMA award show, is how Cyrus completely killed it. But in more ways than one. The majority opinion is that Miley is your basic teenager-gone-wrong story. Another Lindsay Lohan in the making. Parents call ‘foul’ over her obscenity and raunchiness, while teenagers go as far as to call her ‘psychotic’ or ‘crazy’.
But let’s look at the big picture here. Miley Cyrus is nowhere near out of work. She doesn’t show up late to concerts or movie-sets. She takes her work…fairly seriously. And she’s raking in the cash.
Miley Cyrus has gotten more video views, MP3 downloads, and attention than any other celebrity right now. And it doesn’t even matter that what she did was…not exactly normal. Think about it. If you cause a big stir, you’re going to get attention. She didn’t do anything illegal, so no one can arrest her. She didn’t do anything offensive, so no activist group can go after her. In fact, the only way Cyrus is suffering right now, is from the horrible things that people say about her. Which doesn’t mean too much when she’s making as much money as she is right now.
Hannah Montana would have been forgotten. After the show was canceled, Miley Cyrus would have eventually turned into nothing but a faded Disney celebrity, much like Mitchell Musso and Emily Osment, the other two stars of the show. Sure, Cyrus had more than enough for a majorly-early retirement…but we’ve learned by now. If a star likes being the spotlight, they want to stay there. And Cyrus has every intention of doing so.
‘Goody-goody’singers don’t get too much of a market today, especially with singers like Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift owning monopolies on that particular market. But look at performers like P!nk, Ke$ha, and Lady Gaga. Outrageous is the new sane. Celebrities have to do something crazy to stand out.
Miley Cyrus just knows how to do it in…well, let’s say less ‘style’ than many others have chosen. But, her ultimate goal was to lose the baby-face and get a new, ‘rebellious’ sort of look. Despite everything else, I think she’s accomplished that.
Stepping back for a minute, we can even talk about how Cyrus lives her ‘offstage’ life. Let’s bring up a pretty common point that has been made. Taylor Swift, since she’s appeared, has had many, many, many different boyfriends. Cyrus, for the past four years, has been with the same man, Liam Hemsworth. Despite a recent breakup, I wouldn’t exactly call her ‘unusual’ or ‘overactive’ in the boy department. Cyrus also doesn’t spend much of her time in the magazines for nude photo or cheating scandals.
If we’re being completely honest, Miley Cyrus is just a normal teenage girl playing it up on the stage so she can make her money. And she’s dealing with all of the negativity in her face while she’s trying to do it. If an adult got on the stage and performed that same way, we would find her to be the new Lady Gaga. But, because we feel the need to judge someone based on past roles (Hannah Montana) or their age, Cyrus has been making millions.
So don’t feel too bad for her. I don’t. It’s the attention that’s making her rich, and every single person hating on her is only feeding that fire.
It’s kind of genius…isn’t it?
