The Howell High School equestrian team is having another successful year, with their A team winning the 2013 district championship title and riding into the regional competitions.
“The district meets are three Saturdays in a row, and you add up all the points from each weekend. We won all three,” says team member Mira Young.
The district meet took place at Milford Equestrian fields, where Team A went against multiple teams including Whitmore Lake and Milford.
The equestrian team, equestrian meaning ‘of or related to riding horses’, is made up of different riders riding in different events, including showmanship, which is non-riding event where riders are judged on how well they present their horse ‘on hand’. English, Western, and Saddle Seat are based on how the rider looks while they are riding their horse, and Gymkhana consists of the speed events, where riders race against the clock in events such as barrel racing and relays.
“After that, if we make it, [Regionals] we will go on to states,” Young added.
Young credits part of the team’s outstanding success to the strong bond that all of the members on the team have, as well as their hard work and dedication.
“The team is a lot of fun and has such a great group of riders and girls. I am so happy I get to spend my senior year on the team with such a great group!”
