Coming into the 2013 season for the Howell High School girls golf team, the record for an individual shooting a 45 in one match last year was broken earlier in the season when one member of the team shot a 44, now that record has been broken once again.
Madi Guilmette was at practice the week before the match against Lakeland and shot a 42, Guilmette did not think that she would ever have that kind of game during a real match, but she was wrong.
“I shot a 42 in practice, I never thought I would shoot it in a match, it was a surprise”, says Guilmette.
Guilmette has been playing golf for four years now. Her dad was really the one who helped her get into golf. He always helps her with her game and practicing. Her family also has a big role in her life. They’re always there to support her.
Her family isn’t the only one that has been there for her. Her coach Jeff Hughey has played a big role in her golf game as well. “No one has ever shot in the low 40’s like that, not even in practice,” Hughey says as he recalls her record setting practice.
On October 3, during a match against Lakeland, Guilmette shot that same 42 she shot in practice. Guilmette knew she had the record when she shot a birdie on the final hole of the match, with the previous record of 44 still fresh in her mind because it occurred only a week before her record.
“I knew she scored well when she handed me her score card. She had a smile on her face and I found it strange because she’s never smiling,” Hughey says as he laughs about his joke.
Guilmette has high expectations from her coach now that she broke the record. He believes highly in her, hoping she will always play that well.
Speaking directly to Guilmette at the end of the interview, Hughey had this to say to her: “Next, all you have to do is shoot under 40 and I know you can do it. You’ll just need to stay focused. All it takes is a little confidence…confidence.”
