This year marks the 5th annual Pink Game for the Lady Highlander basketball teams. The games will raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is the largest and most well-known breast cancer organization in the nation. It aids in breast cancer research, education, treatment, and much more.
On Feb. 14, the varsity basketball team will sport pink uniforms instead of their usual green and gold. There will be a bake sale, raffles, and giveaways, as well as a wing eating contest at halftime which is donated by Buffalo Wild Wings. Other businesses around the Howell area will be donating to help fund for the events of this game as well.
“It’s always a good feeling raising money for a good cause. Having an aunt that’s a breast cancer survivor makes it even more meaningful and important to me,” says senior captain Tess Weatherly.
This game is not only about raising money for this wonderful foundation, but it’s also about awareness of the disease. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. It is also the most common diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of death in women. Although it is rare, even men can get breast cancer too.
“The whole team is excited to participate in such an event. It will be awesome to know that we raised money and awareness for this cause,” says Weatherly.
Everyone is encouraged to come and support this cause and the cheer on the Lady Highlanders as they shoot for a cure.
