During the school year, Howell High School offers meal plans for students who come from needy families that may be unable to put forward enough money to provide their children with school lunches at full cost. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that, when school is out for the summer, there are students who still don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
Our local Salvation Army has decided to give an option to these children and teenagers – the Summer Lunch Bunch. This program takes place from June 16 through August 8 at the locations below:
Monday: St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hamburg
Tuesday: Shepherd of the Lakes Church in Brighton
Wednesday: St. Agnes Church in Fowlerville
Thursday: SonRise Church in Howell
Friday: Hartland Community Education Center
Families can enjoy one served meal one day of each week. At the site, they will also be given meals to take home with them for later in the week. Transportation can be provided if a reason is explained in the application that prospective families are required to fill out.
There is no cost for anyone who attends, and there are games, prizes, and more included in the event.
Applications become available on May 1. Those interested should call the local Salvation Army at (517)-546-4750 to have an application mailed to their home.
Community members and students can also assist in this cause by providing support in the form of money, gift cards, volunteer time, food donations, or food driving. Anyone interested in this opportunity should call Liz Welch, the coordinator, at the number listed above. They can also email her at [email protected]
