With a budget of a mere estimated five million dollars (being that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End was 300 million dollars), Insidious: Chapter 2 has made eight times that and has only been in theaters for a little over a week. Director James Wan has done it again given that the first installment, Insidious, had an estimated budget of one and a half million dollars and overall had a gross of 53.9 million dollars.
Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) and his wife Renai (Rose Byrne) believe that all their troubles are gone after their son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), comes out of a spiritual coma. However, in the first installment viewers are led to believe that Josh is being possessed by a demon. Insidious: Chapter 2 focuses on how he may or may not get back to his body stolen by the malicious demon in the physical world being that he is stuck in the spiritual world.
The sequel takes place after the demon possessing Josh brutally murdered the psychic, Elise, and longtime friend of Josh’s mother. Elise was the one who helped the retrieve their son out of the spiritual coma and or the spiritual realm he was trapped within.
The story line weaves in and out of the past life of Josh and focuses on the background of the demon, known as “The Bride in Black,” and why it acts the way it does. Additionally, there is footage of the first movie shown all throughout the second that way if someone was not able to see Insidious, they would be fine to watch the sequel.
Some feel as though the plot was a bit twisted and sadistic.
I disagree.
I think it was a fantastic horror film that portrayed the skill and sinister views that James Wan wanted to portray within his production. I enjoyed the fact that I was always waiting for something else to happen. I loved how James Wan carefully interpreted the story line of the first movie into the second one. It was brilliant!
I was actually able to follow this movie and not get confused. Yes, there were a few parts in which I had no idea what was going on, but right as my mind had pandemonium regarding the plot, my questions were soon answered.
I can understand why the budget was five times of what the first one was. This movie was a whole level better than its preceding film and the acting was a lot better. Wilson had the complicated role of having to play a completely different character in Insidious: Chapter 2 than he did in Insidious.
And he did it fantastically. His acting was much more convincing and I honestly believed that he was a crazed demon stuck within a poor, innocent man’s body.
I would not recommend this movie to people with faint hearts being that I was quite startled multiple times throughout the movie. There are certain parts that disturbed me, and to be completely honest, I screamed a few times.
However, this was a beautifully crafted horror film that contained the perfect amount of suspense, terror, and drama. People who enjoyed the Saw movies or The Conjuring (also directed by James Wan), should put this movie on their to-do list of movies to see, and I can only hope they will enjoy it as much as I did.
